Q: Who can join Formation Wind Band?
A: Any female identifying musician over the age of 18!
Q: How do you decide who gets to join the ensemble each cycle?
A: Our current method of selecting participants is simply based on the order in which people register. Registration opens on a Sunday at 11 am -- just like our rehearsals. Some sections tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to set a reminder!
Q: Where are rehearsals?
A: All rehearsals AND our concert take place at North Seattle College in the performance hall. There are two parking lots right near the entrance off North College Rd, and we have a large sign to direct you. Our band manager will send out maps, and her cell number, and other helpful information before the first rehearsal so you can feel at ease.
Q: I haven't played as much lately as I used to. How hard is the music?
A: Our music typically sits between a grade 4 and 5. If you're not familiar with the difficulty scale of wind band repertoire, 1 is the easiest and 6 is the hardest. We want everyone in Formation to feel comfortable and have a great experience preparing and performing the music, so use your best judgment. Only you know your personal level of musicianship and your time constraints outside of Sunday rehearsals.
Q: I heard about this group from a friend, but they're not participating this cycle. I'm anxious to join a group where I don't know anyone... Will I be welcomed?
A: You will be welcomed immediately! It's tough in a large group to get to know each other, but Formation is a one-of-a-kind experience where women of all backgrounds can come and be 100% themselves. We do introductions at the first rehearsal (they're low-key, enlightening, and will help you find other women you have something in common with), and our biggest rule is "You're not allowed to say you're sorry." Come join us and see!
Q: Does it cost to join Formation?
A: Yes. Formation Membership cost is $50 per cycle. We at Formation believe that cost should never keep someone from making music. We offer scholarships for those who need them, so don't let the membership costs scare you away.
Q: I might have a previous obligation on one of the Sunday Rehearsals. Does this mean I should avoid participating?
A: Nope! Join us! You can miss one rehearsal and still participate, as long as it isn't the day of sectionals. Sectionals are super important for our literature preparation, and a fun way to get to know the ladies in your section. Plus - there are snacks that day! If you know you have to miss a day, fill out our absence sheet.
Q: I have other questions. Who can I ask?
A: Our band manager, Christy, is always ready to answer any questions you may have. You can email her at [email protected] and she will get back to you as quick as she can.
